Share![]() Screenshot of the raw obtaining P2P program, Share. Share is a closed-source Japanese P2P (peer-2-peer) network created in 2004 which is being developed as an eventual replacement for WinNY. Ever since the author of WinNY was arrested by the Kyoto Prefectural Police, Share has been developed as its successor with a focus on higher security. Share functions in much the same manner as Winny, using encrypted caches, filenames and IP addresses, and is based on the same node organized architecture as Winny. Fansubbers today primarily use Share as one of the numerous methods of obtaining raws. However, Share has not become popular with fansubbers in general due to its obscurity, lack of documentation, its need for a massive cache (at least 4GiB or more), and its hard-coded minimum upload/download speed of 50kb/s -- a requirement which many Asian networks are capable of, but not their Western counterparts. As a result, some fansubbers continue to use WinNY, especially when searching for raws of older anime series, as Share's networks contain files that are more recent and mainstream. The latest known version of Share (both the EX2(TCP) and NT5(UDP) versions) were released March 31, 2006 on the Share network itself. So far, that is the only known way to download or upgrade to the newest Share client. Related Links |
