SSATool

Screenshot of SSATool

SSATool is a program written by Dansolo in 2004 meant to automate certain tasks in Sub Station Alpha files. Originally, it was based around automating karaoke effects, but since then it has developed many new features, allowing it to do much more today.

SSATool marks the first time a typesetter has allowed a karaoke effects program to be released as freeware to fansubbers. Up to this point, the realm of karaoke effects was a highly guarded practice. Many experienced typesetters or karaoke experts, for personal convenience or to prevent plagarism, wrote complex karaoke effects programs for private use and never released code for the SSA scripts nor the actual program that generated them.

The latest version of SSATool (version 4.3.6) was released on May 31, 2007. It is written in the C# language and requires the installation of the Microsoft .NET 2.0 platform. As of 2007, SSATool is still being developed, albeit slowly as the author has joined the Aegisub team.
