Raw Provider(redirected from Wiki.RawGetter) A Raw Provider (Raw), also known as a raw getter or rawget, is a person who specializes in obtaining raws or raw video files to fansubbing groups. Typical raw providers serve multiple groups at a time, providing numerous shows at once. This serves a pool of options for translators in fansub groups to preview which anime series are available to them and to decide whether or not they are interested in any of these series. In a fansub group, a raw provider generally is expected to provide raws of all the episodes in the series before a group commits to it, especially for older animes, shorter series or OAVs. For VHS fansubbers, raw acquisition was a difficult task and was technically considered as the first step in the fansub process. However, due to the advent of video capturing and the abundance of raws today, some groups do not regard raw acquisition as an important step anymore, or have stopped naming raw providers in typical fansub credits. Due to the ubiquity of raws nowadays, the importance of translation seems to have overshadowed the importance of obtaining raws, despite their role in providing the original videos for fansubbers to choose from and enabling them to fansub a series to completion. In light of technological changes, it is now important to distinguish the difference between a raw provider and a DVD ripper. A raw provider usually deals with HDTV or TV video sources that have yet to be domestically released, whereas a DVD ripper obtains "raws" by extracting videos from authentic DVDs, or even pirated ISO images of such DVDs. Likewise, encoding a raw using a DVD source is not considered capping. This is not unlike early fansubbers who illegally extracted videos from SVCDs or laserdiscs imported from Japan, but unlike DVD ripping, these providers had no other way to obtain raw videos other than to pay full price for the original product, hence it was done out of necessity, as back then, raws were much harder to obtain than they are today. In some cases, the term raw collector may be used to refer to raw providers. However, a raw collector may not be in a fansub group or have any particular role to fulfill. Rather, they may simply collect raws for personal interest or for the purpose of creating music videos. In the case they themselves are a translator or understand Japanese, raw collectors watch raws instead of fansubs. In that sense, they are more similar to raw cappers. While most raw providers work on their own, almost all of them mutually share a public list of popular WinNY "nodes" that provide quality anime raws.
