Raw

A raw is simply a video file in any format in its original language with no subtitles. It's the starting point for all fansubbing. Raws can be obtained in a number of ways, but the most common is through Japanese peer 2 peer networks such as Winny and Share. These raws are captured from Japanese TV by cappers or are DVDrips? from Japanese R2 DVDs, and then uploaded to these networks for other Japanese people to download.

Raw quality can vary considerably, based on the equipment and sophistication of the capper. Often, there will be many different raws for a particular episode, and groups will have to choose between them. There are many different aspects to keep in mind, including the codec it was encoded in, and the filesize, as well as broadcasting artifacts like interlacing? and dot crawl? to watch out for.

Some raws will be at 120 fps, because the show was hybrid?. Sometimes, raws will be released at 120 fps even though the show is not hybrid, simply because it makes the capper seem cooler, or out of ignorance.
