MediaFactoryIncident

Ξ The following article is a stub. You can help by expanding it.

In December of 2004, Animesuki? and a number of fansub groups recieved a letter from a Japanese law firm on behalf of Media Factory Inc, a Japanese anime production company responsible for many shows like Genshiken and School Rumble, asking them to remove all fansubs of shows they produced.

This is the first, and only, known incident of a Japanese company taking any public action against fansubbers, and created quite a stir in the community.

Before this incident, it was a commonly held belief that Japanese companies were either ignorant or supportive of the actions of fansubbers. This incident called all that into question. Many people predicted this was the start of a wave of involvement from Japanese companies, however those predictions turned out to be false (so far).
