MPEG-4AVC

H.264, also known as MPEG-4 AVC, is a video compression standard defined in part 10 of the MPEG-4 specifications. also known as MPEG-4 AVC, or simply AVC (Advanced Video Coding). AVC standards for "Advanced Video Coding", and is also known as H264. It can compress about 10 times better than MPEG-2 video compression, and about 1.8 times better than MPEG-4 ASP codecs.

Playback Requirements

You will need these things in order to play H.264 encoded releases:

Hardware

  • An Intel/AMD based machine (or compatible) with 1GHz CPU or faster (it played on our P3 1 ghz)
    • Slower systems of around 800MHz, particularly AMD Athlon, may play a limited amount of H.264 encodes.
  • A PPC based Mac with a G4 1Ghz CPU or faster; any G5 CPU (When using a G4 CPU, you will require at least 512MB RAM)
  • H.264 compatible decoder
  • compatible media player
  • MP4 splitter, if the video is in mp4 format
  • MKV splitter, if the video is in mkv format

For Windows
There are a few popular methods of playing H.264 encoded files on Windows:

  • Use latest ffdshow. Currently, the official 2005-11-29 build is recommended.
    • When you install FFDShow, uncheck all postprocessing options, and check the box to decode Ogg Vorbis.
    • With FFDShow installed, you can play most releases with the majority of the media players available, such as Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, Zoom Player, and BSPlayer.
    • Alternatively, you may use the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP). Do not use any other codec packs (such as K-Lite).
  • Use VLC media player, which has built-in codec and splitter to handle our releases. Make sure you have the latest version (at least 0.8.5).
  • Use the latest version of CoreAVC. CoreAVC is payware developed by CoreCodec, but tests from Doom9 have shown that CoreAVC is significantly faster than other solutions.
    • Best option for people with slower computers or people looking to watch high definition H.264.
If the file is in mkv or mp4 format, then also install Haali's Media Splitter.

For Mac OS X

  • MPlayerOSX (b8r3 or higher) can handle H.264 encodes, as can VLC media player for OS X

For Linux/Unix

  • MPlayer can play these files just fine.
