Encoding
Encoding is one of the three necessary elements of a fansub other than translating and timing. Encoding is ultimately the process of taking a fansubbed script and applying the subtitles to the original animation, also known as the RAW in the fansub tongue. FilteringThe most difficult aspect of encoding is the process of filtering the RAW. Filtering refers to processing the original video such that it looks sharper, smoother, and overall cleaner than it originally was. Sometimes filtering is also used to help increase the compressibility of a video. Most fansub encoders learn this trade from the popular Doom9 Forums. The prerequisite is the availability of time and effort required in reading and testing the new found knowledge. CodecsMost fansubs today support the use of MPEG-4, whether it be DivX, XviD, or H264/AVC. The two most popular codecs as of this article are XviD and H264.
