CapperA Capper, or more formally a video capturer, is a person who records a program off of TV to a digital format, and then makes the file available either directly to a fansub group or on a peer-2-peer (P2P) network such as Winny or Share. The word "Capper" is derived from the word "capture." In fansubbing, cappers usually refer to the actual people living in Japan who use their computers or DVD/BluRay recorders to record their favorite television shows, some of which have the misfortune of airing in the very late hours of the morning when everyone is asleep (2-4am). They then share these files on Winny and Share with others. The reason the Japanese do this is so that they can watch other television shows that were aired on TV channels outside of their region, on pay-per-view, or on satelite TV channels. Raw providers living outside of Japan who have access to Japanese TV channels and capture it directly for their fansub groups are also considered cappers, although such people are few and far between. It is estimated that less than 2% of all raw cappers are of this special variety. Related Links |
