ASSDraw

ASSDraw is an experimental new program for drawing custom shapes in SSA and ASS format for Textsub, written in Java by ai-chan, a programmer residing on the Aegisub forums. The idea was first initiated in August 2006 by one of Aegisub's creators, jfs, after splitting a forum thread focused on typesetting shapes, leading to ai-chan's development of an actual program capable of generating the draw commands required to create custom shapes accurately in SSA/ASS.

Until now, proper usage of the draw command syntax written by Kotus for Sub Station Alpha remained a mystery among fansubbers for many years. Many encoders and typesetters alike resorted to other methods to insert custom shapes, logos and graphics into their fansubs, such as creating custom fonts with custom shapes, combining or maniplating dingbat fonts, importing image files with logo plugins in Virtualdub?, by using the ImageReader command in Avisynth?, or by using profressional video editing programs such as Sony Vegas Video and Adobe After Effects. It has only been in recent times that the draw commands provided in the SSA Commands Reference Guide have been successfully deciphered and hence utilized to make very simple shapes in fansubs, such as squares and circles. ASSDraw provides a full working visual preview of what is being drawn, allowing the typesetter to create fairly complex shapes without the use of any images or additional video editing.

The latest known version of ASSDraw is version 2.0, released December 2006. It is unknown whether the program is still under developement, or whether it will continue to expand its capabilities to create or even trace more complex designs.
